Workers in retail, hospitality, food, and consumer services were nearly four times as likely as those in technology or finance to leave without financial support. Sixty-two percent of laid-off retail and hospitality staff received no severance or transitional support, compared to only 16% in technology and 15% in finance.

As a result, 64% of workers in retail and hospitality reported feeling that their employer handled the redundancy process unfairly.

The psychological impact of these offboarding experiences has permanently reshaped how professionals evaluate corporate loyalty. Resume Genius found that 86% of respondents say their layoff permanently altered their view of job security and employer loyalty.

Rather than maintaining single-employer focus, 40% of workers plan to actively monitor external job openings while re-employed. In the technology sector, 55% of employees now plan to keep searching for new opportunities while working.

Faced with ongoing technological uncertainty, 40% of laid-off workers are considering changing industries entirely, while 28% are pivoting toward contract work.
